FUTURE CATS

AWARDED AN EMMY FOR OUTSTANDING GRAPHIC DESIGN & ART DIRECTION

It’s in our core to innovate, and this project for Nat Geo WILD stays true to that mission using technology never before used on a reality series.

What is the future of big cats? Future Cats examines the possibilities using a visually groundbreaking style for a nature documentary. A miniaturized world, with life-like carvings of animals and environments is used to illustrate how big cats may adapt to a planet that is changing around them. Beautiful matte paintings that come to life are also used throughout the special.

BIG MACHINE used a pipeline usually reserved for feature film productions, that allowed real-time lighting and interaction with materials. BIG MACHINE built specialized render modules using over 20,000 GPU cores to compute the complex calculations used to create this stunning virtual world.

BIG MACHINE produced the entire show and all of the design and animation used throughout.

Our team of BTS producers is well-experienced working around an active production, wrangling schedules, designing exclusive content, incorporating existing footage, working around spoiler sensitive story-lines, collaborating with existing PR teams and shooting in a fresh visual style.

Our BTS specials can typically be created for a fraction of the budget of the main show and command the same audience numbers and ad sales benefits as the main show.

SHORT FILMS FOR AMC

BIG MACHINE scares its way into scripted content with the new groundbreaking mini-doc series “Living Nightmares” created exclusively for AMC’s FearFest 2012.

Director Steve Petersen developed the 10 episode series of documentaries to confront people’s deepest and darkest fears.  In the tradition of Orson Welles, viewers will be left stunned and convinced what they have seen is real.  A simple swim in the ocean, a nap or a meal will never be the same.  “Living Nightmares” makes mundane and everyday experiences a terrifying proposition.

Petersen and BIG MACHINE leveraged verité cinematography, stunning visual effects and compelling storytelling to create authentic looking bone-chilling stories.  It’s a technique that Petersen has perfected directing shows for National Geographic Channel and Investigation Discovery.

BIG MACHINE produced, shot and edited the entire series and also directed and produced host wraps for FearFest 2012 featuring popular screenwriter, actor, producer and director Kevin Smith.

REAL VICE MIAMI

SERIES FOR INVESTIGATION DISCOVERY

Miami in the 1980s was a wild time when corruption and drugs ruled the city. The cocaine cowboys were the only true law because the cops were often as bad as the criminals. BIG MACHINE produced this compelling series for Investigation Discovery.

VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE

SPECIAL FOR NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

BIG MACHINE has created the visual identity of the National Geographic Special “Valentine’s Day Massacre.”  The production company, Robot Field & Post and National Geographic Channel contracted with BIG MACHINE to create a unique visual style for the re-creations used throughout the show.

Using a technique called GlideTime, we created a frozen moment in time to represent the infamous Chicago massacre.  The camera moves through the frozen scene revealing different angles and details as the viewer is given a view never seen before.

BIG MACHINE’s Steve Petersen also directed all of the live action and graphic re-creations used throughout the show.
